Primary School in Rora
In cooperation with the Lions Club Sighișoara, the Thoma Foundation looked after and supported the Rora primary school for disadvantaged Roma children, located around five kilometers outside Sighișoara. It was reopened and partially renovated in 1999 in cooperation with the town of Sighișoara, although the town did not continue operating the affiliated kindergarten.
Our support for the school included building a small playground, funding toys and school supplies, distributing food, clothing, and shoes - partly as an incentive for the children and their parents - providing free eye examinations and glasses, giving small Easter, St Nicholas Day, and Christmas gifts, and, from spring 2018 onward, funding and organizing a free hot lunch for the children and their 70-year-old retired teacher in cooperation with the Lions Club Sighișoara.
In spring 2018, however, the town authorities unexpectedly closed the school - a terrible situation for the children. Fortunately, the primary school in the neighboring municipality of Daneș agreed to accept "our" children, and we finance their private school bus.
