Who We Are

Since 1989, the Thoma Foundation has been working in a country plagued by corruption, inequality, and poverty to support people in need, the sick, the elderly, and large families in the city of Sighișoara, with the aim of giving them a better chance at a life of dignity, free from suffering. Working together according to the principle of “empowering people to help themselves” we sensitively strive to bring about improvements while avoiding shame and humiliation. In doing so, we are also able to verify on-site that progress is being made and that the funds are being used for their intended purpose.

What We Do

We help people in need where help is most urgently needed: with food, financial assistance, sponsorships, and scholarships. Our assistance is personalized, direct, and long-term, ranging from support for the elderly and sick to large families and students who would struggle to continue their education without financial aid.

Even after more than 30 years, it is sometimes almost unimaginable to me what has become of Harald's and my spontaneous idea. Although I have been to Sighișoara countless times, it is always a new challenge. Poverty and hardship are still a daily reality for far too many people.
